If you look up this product on Amazon, you will be stunned. The Mpow 059 bluetooth headphones have over 40k user reviews and still maintaining a 4.5 stars rating.
We have seen this question everywhere and even somebody recently asked me this. What is there in this device that it is selling like hotcakes?
Today we are going to put all our sentiments aside and review this pair of headphones so that you could finally understand how it is retaining that top position over the years.
Mpow 059 got buyers’ attention with the right kind of design. The variant I reviewed had a glossy black color with a red accent. There are silver oval-shaped disks on the outer center of the earcups giving it more of a casual look.
The type of this headphone is over-ear. If you don’t already know what that is, over-ear headphones feature larger ear cups that sit encompassing the ears. The cushions usually don’t allow any air to get in.
On the right earcup, you have the physical control buttons. There are five buttons in total which are volume up, volume down, next song, previous song, and the main power button which is also the play, pause, and answer button. Physical buttons might feel weird at first if you are used to touching or swiping buttons.
It is commendable that they have eight color variants in total. So if you did not like the red accent in this headphone or you only like plain single-colored electronic devices, you don’t have to look away.
The body is made out of plastic but the strategic placement of steels makes it feel more robust. The headband is foldable and in general, the design is pretty similar to Beats Studio3. The material used on the cushions is memory protein which, I believe, is a good fit for longer use.
Large neodymium drivers
Mpow 059 uses a dynamic driver with a neodymium magnet. The advantage of this type of driver is that these are quite lightweight and much smaller in appearance than the conventional ferrous magnets.
If you would like to know in detail how it works and probably, would love to know about other drivers too, you can check out this post. It has some visuals that explain them nicely.
Coming back to our review. The diameter of this driver 40mm which is on the semi-higher end for over-ear headphones. However, the size of a driver does not necessarily mean quality. In general, it is an indication of how loud the sound could be.
Memory protein earpads
These headphones use memory-protein based earpads. So what is the advantage of that? Memory protein is one special kind of fabric whose outer layer is covered in protein and resin. They don’t need any break-in period and therefore, are very comfortable from day 1.
The protein layer on the cushion slowly wears off as you use and but it would take about 5-6 years to be completely off. The best way to minimize the corrosion is to keep it as dry and cool as possible.
Wired and wireless modes
Bluetooth headphones are good as long as you have some power. If you are one of those guys who stay outside all day long, you need to be careful about which headphone you pick.
In the case of Mpow 059, you are completely safe. The battery in wireless mode runs for around 20 hours. After that 20 hours, you can connect the 3.5mm AUX cable and use it as a wired headphone.
There is just one small note that the microphone only works in the wireless mode. So you will not be able to wire it up to your phone and talk.
The advantage of foldable headphones is that they can fit in a narrow space. This headphone has a foldable design and the steel enforced joints make sure that it does not squeak that much.
There is also a carrying pouch provided for this headphone. Of course, a sturdy case would have been better but this one has just enough space to put it your headphone, AUX cable, and micro usb charging cable.
Before you make any assumption, I recommend that you go and check the price first. Because this will make a whole lot of difference.
The sound quality of this device is decent. It comes with a 40mm driver which delivers a good amount of volume. As a normal user, you wouldn’t have to go over two-third of the volume.
The CSR chip combined the neodymium drives offer good clarity of sound. We would say that the sound is a bit muddy because of the internal enhancement at the lower frequencies. But if you love bass, you would love this one.
This pair is most suitable for home and office. For commuting and gym, it does not offer any extra convenience as there is no active noise cancellation technology in it. The person sitting next to you will be able to hear some sound.
The wireless range is around 33 feet or 10 meters and uses bluetooth 4.1 technology. You can also go wired with the provided 3.5mm aux cable.
The microphone, however, only works in wireless mode. The quality of this microphone is not very good but it tried to balance it up with CVC 6.0 microphone noise-cancelling technology.
4. Value for Money
Mpow 059 is a pretty good value for money. The design fits well for mixed-usage and the sound quality is enjoyable. With its foldable headbands and memory-protein cushions, you can wear it for a longer period of time without discomfort.
One thing that I would definitely miss if I have to make this my go-to headphone is active noise cancellation. Right now, it only offers a small amount of noise isolation, but I wouldn’t expect more from it knowing the price.
If you think, you can add just a little more money, Mpow 059 Plus would be a great choice. It has everything that Mpow 059 offers, plus it includes active noise cancellation for commuting and bluetooth 5.0 for a longer wireless range.
As I mentioned earlier, this headphone gave us the vibe of Beats Studio3 and in fact, they are pretty similar in features too. So it is worth giving Beats a shot provided you want to go premium.
And last but not least, you may also check out our most favorite Sony WH-1000XM4 which is crowned as the noise cancellation king. If you would like to know more, have a look at our headphone buying guide.
5. Our Rating
It is no brainer that Mpow 059 balanced its bassy sound signature with good comfort and design. The price it comes in is generous and there is no competition for it because any company would charge two or three times for this set of features. The battery lasts for about 20 hours and when the power is gone, you can connect the 3.5mm aux cable in and use it as a wired headphone.
